THAT AIN’T HIP-HOP
In this month’s issue staffers, Diana Reyes and Shawan Wade, introduce you to women who aren’t necessarily hip-hop, but worth a look. Listen to their sounds:
Ursula Rucker Silver or Lead
At a time when simple, easy music sells, it is refreshing and imperative to hear a challenge to the formulaic, mediocre and mass-produced culture that is an increasingly overwhelming aspect of our times. Ursula Ruckers latest album Silver or Lead moves us beyond the easy.
Where Shes Going: An interview with Melanie Durrant
Though her unique and infectious sounds have repeatedly saturated the airwaves of Toronto urban radio, people easily recognize her sound, but not yet her name. With attention-getting songs as “Housework” and “Where Im Goin”, her pervasive sound has been known to provoke the question, “Who is that?” Answer: She is Melanie Durrant.
CELEBRATION TIME
Don’t stress, we haven’t forgotten our hip-hop roots. We will also take you on a journey to this year’s Black August Celebration, held in Brooklyn on August 10th in Black August: A Celebration of Hip-Hop and Our Freedom Fighters.
VERBALISMS magazine is SIX issues strong and growing. We have a lot of new things planned for our second year and want you to be apart of it! Stay tuned for details on how you can become a part of the VERBALISMS team.
