After providing online hip-hop content about women in hip-hop over the last 2 years, VERBALISMS Magazine will be establishing itself as a key representative of the female hip-hop population by going to print in spring of 2005. The organization includes a talented collective of editors, contributors and visual artists from around the world, and will provide entertaining and provocative content about hip-hop’s female culture drivers.

With its first issue expected to launch in March 2005, the 32-page, 5.5 x 4.25, quarterly publication aims to raise its profile by shifting into the world of print. Not only will the publication attract new readers, but it will also be a key factor in growing an existing online readership.

“Hip-Hop needs VERBALISMS. Women in hip-hop need VERBALISMS,” says Raquel Wilson, Editor-in-Chief of the magazine.

With distribution in independent bookstores, clothing boutiques and records stores across the United States and Canada, VERBALISMS’ print publication will include features and interviews, as well as departments such as “Movements,” which will cover the local hip-hop scenes; “Canvas,” a visual artist spotlight; “Anti-Style Report,” a fashion and beauty feature; in addition to regular music, film, literature and product reviews.

Jean Grae’s critically acclaimed 2002 debut album, Attack of the Attacking Things, made big noise in the underground — Rolling Stone Magazine proclaimed her as “The best kept secret on New York’s Indie Scene” and Entertainment Weekly recently named her as one of America’s top 10 artists on the brink of superstardom.

“Jean Grae is certainly one of the top MC’s out there and she already ranks among the top female MC’s of all time,” says Babygrande CEO Chuck Wilson.

Babygrande and Orchestral Entertainment have joined forces to release Jean Grae’s as yet untitled second album. Look out for the first single early this fall. Until then, make sure you check out her blazing track “My Crew” on the EBC/Rucker Park soundtrack dropping July 15th on Melee/Dreamworks.
