Get up, stand up!
It’s an election year in the USA and we decided to take this opportunity to put in our call of ACTION! This ACTION! issue introduces you to people, organizations and issues making an impact on the global community.
ELECTION 2004 (USA) | Is it merely enough to just vote? What about the issues?
Most people would probably agree that the political system can be a bit tedious at times, but does the process really need to be repackaged and sold to American youth in more colorful wrapping?

SUPA-DUPA-FLY WITH MISSY ELLIOTT AND ADIDAS | Missy shows the world some RESPECT and takes ACTION! against domestic violence.
Missys determination to put hip-hop back on the positive path is undisputable. I do believe when you reach a certain status in this business, you’ve got to be positive. You have to remember you are a role model, she says.

SUEBEEPHLY | Subeephly proves that even the individual can provoke ACTION!.
“Womanifestation is the brainchild of DJ Lady Jes One. She felt that locally, women in hip-hop were not given the proper light. When people think of women in hip-hop, they conjure images of scantily clad females holding their crotches. She asked me to help out, and we came up with the name “womanifestation”, which represents the woman manifesting herself.

VOL. 2 ISSUE 4: THECOMEBACK | VERBALISMS Magazine makes it’s re-debut!
After a short hiatus the magazine for and about women in hip-hop is back. Thanks to all who sent emails wondering where we were. Your emails reassure the staff that there is not only a need but a want for a publication like VERBALISMS.

We have many things in the works for the magazine, so tune in regularly for updated info from the world of hip-hop from a female perspective.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY HIP-HOP | Contributing writer Deesha Dyer asks, "Where the ladies at?"
From New York to Los Angeles, Miami to Portland, and every city in between, there is a new issue brewing among the female gender and hip-hop. However, this time the issue doesn’t lie with a Lil’ Kim album cover or the abundance of flesh showing on the females in hip-hop videos. Instead, these things are serving as underlying reasons why, from suburbia to inner-city ghettos, people are questioning the lack of female representation at hip-hop shows.

TOOFLY TO MISS | Meca Isa talks with TOOFLY on respect, spray cans and the future.
"My theme is the urban environment around me and how it’s influences are expressed in my work. By placing my character in this world I am making her part of it and in conjunction they live together in harmony as I do."

PARTICIPATE | You & VERBALISMS Magazine define the culture.
VERBALISMS Magazine is an open avenue for the conversations & debates that give insight into how women effect & are affected by the politics, revolutions & lifestyles of hip-hop.

You are invited to be a part of VERBALISMS. If you are a writer, photographer or have other skills you think would benefit VERBALISMS Magazine, email us and let us know how we can add you to the team.

THAT AIN’T HIP-HOP
In this month’s issue staffers, Diana Reyes and Shawan Wade, introduce you to women who aren’t necessarily hip-hop, but worth a look. Listen to their sounds:

Ursula Rucker Silver or Lead
At a time when simple, easy music sells, it is refreshing and imperative to hear a challenge to the formulaic, mediocre and mass-produced culture that is an increasingly overwhelming aspect of our times. Ursula Ruckers latest album Silver or Lead moves us beyond the easy.

Where Shes Going: An interview with Melanie Durrant
Though her unique and infectious sounds have repeatedly saturated the airwaves of Toronto urban radio, people easily recognize her sound, but not yet her name. With attention-getting songs as “Housework” and “Where Im Goin”, her pervasive sound has been known to provoke the question, “Who is that?” Answer: She is Melanie Durrant.

CELEBRATION TIME
Don’t stress, we haven’t forgotten our hip-hop roots. We will also take you on a journey to this year’s Black August Celebration, held in Brooklyn on August 10th in Black August: A Celebration of Hip-Hop and Our Freedom Fighters.

Peace to those loving hip-hop and blessings to women making strides for the culture.

In this issue of VERBALISMS magazine our staff has compiled the latest and greatest on the independent scene. The ladies featured in this month’s issue of VERBALISMS are writing their own industry rules, while keeping us wanting more from the underground. Take a look at what’s waiting…

Masia One: Realizing Hip-Hop
“Women have been a part of hip-hop culture since realization. The novelty should have worn off by now,” laments Masia One as she talks about making money and music in an industry that rather she shakes her ass. Sharon Paz takes the notes.

Byata: A Master of Flow
A Brooklynite by way of Russia, Byata takes time out with Style Editor, Kara Rondina, to discuss dealing with gender and race bias, individuality and true independent style.

Maya Azucena: Something a Little Different
Shawan Wade writes the story of a storyteller who disrupts popular metaphors of wealth and glorified sexuality, while forcing us to rethink artificial images of life and beauty.

How can you be featured in VERBALISMS? VERBALISMS magazine is always looking for women who are changing the face of music. If you would like to submit your media kit to the staff at VERBALISMS, please contact the Editor at editor@verbalisms.com.
